Search and replace
Find text in a file or across your project, filter results, and review replacements.
Updated
Use Quick Open to find a file name and Search to find text inside files.
Search the current file
- Focus an editor and press
Cmd/Ctrl+F. - Enter text and move between matches using the search controls.
- Enable match case, whole word, or regular expression matching when needed.
- Open replace with
Ctrl+Hwhile the editor is focused, or find Find and Replace in the command palette. - Review the matches before replacing one or all occurrences.
Search your project
Open Search: Global Search from the command palette or press Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+F.
Enter the query, expand a file's matches, and click a result to open its file at that position.
Use include and exclude filters to narrow the search to relevant paths.
For example, search for TODO and include src/** to inspect source files without reading all
of your build output. Use literal text first; turn on regular expressions only when you need a pattern.
Project search is also available through Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+H. The search surfaces show their
current scope and filters; check those before applying a replacement.
Replace across files
Open the replacement controls, enter the replacement, and inspect the matching files. Start with a single replacement to confirm the result before replacing all. Review the resulting Git diff, especially for generated files or large changes.
Missing results
- Confirm that the intended project is active and that the file is saved on disk.
- Clear include/exclude filters and check match-case and regex switches.
- If the Search feature is hidden, enable it in Settings > Features.
- For files in Linux on Windows, open the WSL workspace rather than searching a different Windows folder.
For file navigation, use Quick Open. For syntax and symbol navigation, see Language servers and Outline.
