# Remote connections

Source: https://athas.dev/docs/remote

Connect to SSH or SFTP hosts, verify host identity, and reopen saved connections.

Athas can open remote files through saved SSH or SFTP connections. You need a reachable server,
an account on that server, and authentication accepted by it.

## Create a connection

Enable Remote in Settings if its surface is hidden, then open the Remote sidebar and add a connection.
Enter a name, connection type, host or SSH config alias, port and username. Configure password or
private-key authentication as appropriate. Test the connection before opening the remote workspace.

Use the server's configured port; `22` is the usual SSH default. A VPN, firewall or jump-host setup
can affect reachability independently of your credentials.

## Verify the host

Check the presented host fingerprint against a trusted source before accepting a new host.
A changed host key can mean the server was rebuilt or that you are reaching a different machine.
Investigate the change rather than repeatedly accepting it.

## Work with remote files

Browse and edit files within the connected account's permissions. Saving changes writes to the
remote location; it is not a local copy. Keep backups or version control on the server when editing
important files.

## Reopen from the CLI

After saving a connection, use its ID with the [Athas CLI](https://athas.dev/docs/cli):

```bash
athas remote <connection-id>
athas remote <connection-id> "My server"
```

For Linux projects on the same Windows machine, [WSL](https://athas.dev/docs/wsl) may be the appropriate workspace
instead.
