# Installation

Source: https://athas.dev/docs/installation

Install Athas on macOS, Windows or Linux, choose a package, and safely uninstall it.

Choose the build for your operating system and CPU architecture from [Download Athas](https://athas.dev/download).
Use stable releases for everyday work; see [Updates](https://athas.dev/docs/updates) for upgrades.

## Quick Install

### macOS / Linux

```bash
curl -fsSL https://athas.dev/install.sh | sh
```

If you prefer `wget`:

```bash
wget -qO- https://athas.dev/install.sh | sh
```

### Windows

```powershell
powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://athas.dev/install.ps1 | iex"
```

The install script detects your OS and architecture, downloads the latest stable
release from GitHub by default, verifies the SHA256 checksum when available, and
installs it. To install a specific release, pass its version:

```bash
curl -fsSL https://athas.dev/install.sh | sh -s -- --version 0.15.1
```

On macOS, the script installs Athas to `/Applications`. On Linux, it installs the
app bundle to `~/.local/share/athas/athas.app` and links the executable at
`~/.local/bin/athas`.

On Linux, Athas uses the system WebKitGTK 4.1. The script checks for it and, if
it is missing, prints the command to install it instead of installing an app
that cannot start:

| Distribution   | Package               |
| -------------- | --------------------- |
| Debian, Ubuntu | `libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0` |
| Fedora         | `webkit2gtk4.1`       |
| Arch Linux     | `webkit2gtk-4.1`      |
| openSUSE       | `libwebkit2gtk-4_1-0` |

**Info:**

You can inspect the script before running it:

```bash
curl -fsSL https://athas.dev/install.sh | less
```

## Package Managers

### Homebrew

```bash
brew install --cask athas
```

### Arch Linux (AUR)

```bash
yay -S athas-bin
```

### Nix

```bash
nix run github:athasdev/athas
```

The Homebrew cask and the `athas-bin` AUR package are maintained by the community. WinGet and Scoop
packages are on the way; until then use the PowerShell command above or the Windows installer.

## Manual Download

Download the latest version from GitHub releases:

**[Download from GitHub Releases](https://github.com/athasdev/athas/releases)**

### macOS

1. Download the `.dmg` file from [releases](https://github.com/athasdev/athas/releases)
2. Open the downloaded file
3. Drag Athas to your Applications folder
4. Open Athas from Applications

### Windows

1. Download the NSIS `.exe` or `.msi` installer from [releases](https://github.com/athasdev/athas/releases)
2. Run the installer
3. Follow the installation wizard
4. Launch Athas from the Start Menu

### Linux

Download the package for your distribution and architecture (x64 or ARM64)
from the [download page](https://athas.dev/download) or
[releases](https://github.com/athasdev/athas/releases).

The AppImage runs on most distributions without installing anything. If it
does not start, install FUSE 2 (`libfuse2`):

```bash
chmod +x Athas_*.AppImage
./Athas_*.AppImage
```

Debian and Ubuntu:

```bash
sudo apt install ./Athas_*_amd64.deb
```

Fedora and other RPM-based distributions:

```bash
sudo dnf install ./Athas-*.rpm
```

The Flatpak bundle fetches the GNOME runtime from Flathub on install. The
integrated terminal opens your host shell, but language servers, formatters
and other tools that only exist on the host are not visible inside the
sandbox; use the AppImage, deb or rpm when you rely on them.

```bash
flatpak install --user ./Athas_*_linux-*.flatpak
flatpak run com.code.athas
```

The portable `.tar.gz` bundle needs no system-wide installation, but it
uses the system WebKitGTK 4.1 (see the table above for the package name):

```bash
tar -xzf Athas_*_linux-*.tar.gz
./athas.app/bin/athas
```

To make `athas` available from your shell:

```bash
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/athas ~/.local/bin
mv athas.app ~/.local/share/athas/athas.app
ln -sf ~/.local/share/athas/athas.app/bin/athas ~/.local/bin/athas
```

## Verify the install

Open Athas, open a project folder, save a test file, and open the terminal. Install the shell command
from **Settings > General > Terminal Command**, then run `athas --help` in a new shell.
If the app will not launch, record the exact error and package format for [Troubleshooting](https://athas.dev/docs/troubleshooting).

## Uninstall

Quit Athas before uninstalling. Removing user-data directories also removes local settings and
history; export or back up anything you want to keep first. Removing only the application preserves
its user data. Use the package manager that installed the app when possible.

### macOS

```bash
rm -rf /Applications/Athas.app
```

Optional: permanently remove local settings/history and cache after backing them up:

```bash
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.code.athas
rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/com.code.athas
```

### Windows

Uninstall from **Settings > Apps > Installed apps** or run the uninstaller
from the Start Menu.

Optional: permanently remove remaining user data after backing it up:
```powershell
Remove-Item -Recurse -Force "$env:APPDATA\com.code.athas"
```

### Linux

If installed by the quick install script:

```bash
rm -f ~/.local/bin/athas
rm -rf ~/.local/share/athas/athas.app
rm -f ~/.local/share/applications/com.code.athas.desktop
```

If installed from a native package:

```bash
sudo apt remove athas
# or
sudo dnf remove athas
```

If installed from the Flatpak bundle:

```bash
flatpak uninstall --user com.code.athas
```

The AppImage is a single file; delete it to remove Athas.

    Optional: permanently remove application data after backing it up:
```bash
rm -rf ~/.local/share/com.code.athas
rm -rf ~/.config/com.code.athas
```
