# Getting started

Install Athas, open a project, and choose the guides for your development workflow.

Athas is an open-source code editor for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It brings files, Git,
terminals, databases, and AI agents into one workspace. Local editing does not require an account.

## Your first project

1. [Install Athas](https://athas.dev/docs/installation) for your operating system and CPU architecture.
2. Open a folder with `Cmd+O` on macOS or `Ctrl+O` on Windows and Linux, or drag it into Athas.
3. Open a file with `Cmd/Ctrl+P`, edit it, and save with `Cmd/Ctrl+S`.
4. Open the [Command Palette](https://athas.dev/docs/command-palette) with `Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+P` to discover actions.
5. Show the [terminal](https://athas.dev/docs/terminal) with `Cmd/Ctrl+J` and run your project's usual commands.

`Cmd/Ctrl` means Command on macOS and Control on Windows/Linux. Shortcuts in these guides use
the default Athas keymap; presets, custom bindings, and the focused pane can change them.
